I'm leaving Paid to Party

It’s been real y'all, but as I've already told many of the folks on the nightlife beat, next week is my last week doing the Paid to Party gig. Since October, I’ve been splitting time between nightlife and shooting political videos. Beginning on Jan. 21, I’ll cover politics full-time.

I’ve dubbed myself the Observer’s political video columnist. I’ll shoot two videos a week focusing on the 2008 national and state elections. My goal is to reach people under age 35. Along with the experts, I want to feature fun, young folks talking about politics.

I’ve already shot videos with Kevin Mitchell of the Forum, Carleen Shankle of Lotus/Civilian, MC David Galloway and others talking about the presidential race. My videos will have serious news information as well as silly stuff. The videos are called That’s Wassup! Find them at www.charlotte.com/politics.

Sarah Aarthun, who does the A List, will be taking over the Paid to Party beat. Reach her at saarthun@charlotteobserver.com.

I’ll still be hanging out, but mostly at Hom, Loft 1523, Soul (when it opens) and the real hip-hop joints. I’ll also be doing some politics-related interviews at events such as the Bartender’s Ball and Oktoberfest. If you see me with the camera, holla, and let me shoot you before you drink too much.

If you’re young and interested in the presidential race holla.

This proves that anyone, ANYONE can be a political columnist!!!!! I bet a million bucks that Tonya is a leftwing liberal Democrat. Anyone care to bet against me? I think not.......

Great.

Another leftist viewpoint in a McGlatchy publication.

And with a "gangsta's" verbage.

I've just blocked http://www.charlotte.com/politics on my browser so I can never accidentally land there

Good Riddance! That's what is up!

Just what Charlotte needs. Rick Thames must've been whacked out of his skull to sign off on this. What'd you do, tie him to a chair and put a gun to his head? No, wait, I know. He doesn't know about it yet, right? Wow. This oughta really make the fecal matter hit the wind-generating machine. This cracks me up.

Good Riddance to a one sided person. Your reviews of any concert that wasn't hip-hop or r&b were all the same too loud and you hated it. Maybe Sarah will be objective about different music genres.

As for you covering politics I am sure it will be the same as your entertainment columns all leftist elitism. If you would be openminded to different viewpoints you would be a worthy journalist but you will be another typicl leftist editorial writer but with a ebonics dictionary.

Good Luck Tonya!

Tonya, despite some of the previous comments on this board, you will be missed. Thanks for providing info that at times can't be found nowhere else. How else could I hear about all the cool shows at Amos's SouthEnd and Ovens? I always checked your blog to find out when and where the parties were, and even your candid reviews after the event, that will truly be missed, thanks for your contribution to sharing news and info. I hope you will stick around to atleast cover the CIAA this year. Your CIAA party list the past two years have been very helpful. Anyway, good luck on your new assignment and I didn't always agree with you, but I respect who you are and your work. Don't worry about all the haters. Keep doing your thing...Peace

If you want to know about all the cool (very loose usage of the word) shows at Ovens or Amos', believe it or not, but they actually have websites with calendars on them. I know, it's crazy, isn't it!

Hillary is da troof, amiright?

Congratulations, Tonya!
I'd hate to fill your shoes. Hope what's-her-name will be as cool as you were about going to different places and not the same ol', same ol' that some people seem to love. (Change is good, y'all!)
And you'll be a breath of fresh air on the politics coverage. I'll be click on charlotte.com to see what you're doing.

I think it's a great move and I know you will do well. Generation X, Y, whatever the 20-35 somethings are need someone to represent us in the political realm. I wish you luck and hope to see you in the near future. Congratulations!

It is a real shame there are so many haters out there.

God help us all. Tonya, take my advice and get a job as a burger flipper. As a journalist, your grasp of the English language is poor -- both written and spoken. Political commentator?! Give me a break. If Al Sharpton is interested in equality, you're a poitical comemntator.

Maybe you can make a return appearance on P2P to give us an update on Club Onyx?

Interesting that in pretending to be a "journalist" all Tonya cared about last weekend was "Barack" - there wasn't anything else about the other candidates in the running. Just simply Barack. While he's a great man, it seems the black community is only supporting him because of the color of his skin. Journalists aren't supposed to be biased. Paid to Party was a better suit for Tonya.
