Bring on A.I.

We're in the midst of a perfect nightlife storm. There's talk that Allen Iverson might be coming to the Charlotte Bobcats, and a new upscale gentleman's club that caters to African Americans is opening this weekend. Can life get any better?

I’ll start with A.I.

In Tuesday's Observer, Tom Sorensen wrote a column saying Iverson would give Charlotteans a reason to care about the woefully boring Bobcats. I hope Iverson comes here because he will spice up our nightlife.

We've got the Bobcats and the Panthers here, but -- as Sorensen wrote -- none of the Bobcats are stars. And the Panthers' biggest star, Steve Smith, doesn’t party. Iverson brings star power. An A.I./Nelly party easily draws a thousand people here. If Iverson played here, we could draw even more celebrity athletes and hip-hop artists to our nightclubs.

That point brings me to my excitement about Rick's Cabaret becoming Club Onyx on Old Pineville Road. The Charlotte location will be the first outside of Texas. It's about time a city this size has an upscale gentleman's club for African Americans. Champagne and Peaches and Cream are fine when I’m in a roughneck mood. However, when I want more posh atmosphere, I have to go to the Men's Club, and their dancers haven't impressed me lately.

Rick's spokesman Allan Priaulx says the original Onyx in Houston draws professional athletes and rappers. I'm hoping the Charlotte location will do the same.

A.I. combined with Onyx could give our nightlife a good adrenaline rush.
What do you think? Will A.I. enhance our nightlife? Post your replies below.

I don't mind a little edge or color to the Charlotte nightlife, and AI joining the Bobcats would be a big plus for the team...but...how exactly does a topless 'gentleman's' club make a city nightlife better? I don't know whether to feel more sorry for the women being exploited in these venues, or the male suckers who shell out so much coin for something they can't touch. We can do better Tonya.

This is one of the strangest things I've ever read on charlotte.com. Give me a break!

My question is, why do places have to be for blacks only? Aren't the regular strip clubs good enough for everyone? Why do blacks have to keep segregating themselves away from the mainstream population? Imagine if a whites-only strip club tried to start up, oh the uproar they would get!

AI would be great for the nightlife. What is a real city without more urban nightclub shootouts????

If by "enhance" you mean more gun toting criminals shooting each other in the parking lot, then by all means, bring on the partying NBA stars.

Black Entertainment Television
Miss Black America
Now we are suppose to welcome a Black strip club?
What's going on here. Just 40 years ago people gave their lives for equality among the races. Now we are suppose to go back to the way things were then?
What's going on? Are you just going for the "shock value" of your comments, or is this how you really feel Tonya? I've always been one for speaking my mind, but at what cost to myself. You have lost your credibility with me.

jeez, some of you really need to lighten up and think about what you post before you post. Blacks are not segregating themselves by going to clubs that feature predominantly African-American strippers. If black men (or white men or any other race of men/women..whatever) prefer to go to a venue where the strippers are black then what's the problem? It's the same way for African-American men who would rather go to the Men's Club or Twin Peeks or whatever if they're in the mood for something a little different. This is about CHOICE...that's all!

I was in my office looking out my window at around 10:30 and I spotted some action on the rink. Had I KNOWN it was the chicks v. checks game I would have ventured down there to cheer. For what side, I'm not sure. Although I am a chick, I do love my checks.

Glad you all had fun.

more black strip clubs? how about less??

It frustrating to me that people can't see the forest thru the trees. Yes, there is a continued fight for equality but that does not mean that people with similar backgrounds and goals don't want to hang out together. Isn't it nice to just have options? This won't bring more crime - that's as short sighted as claiming we are all actually EQUAL!

^^^^ All white people who have no idea....

Black dudes get tired of going to strip clbs and skinny white chicks are dancing on the pole...

Cant we have a place too...

And not all urban clubs have shoot outs, you all ned to get a life and stop the stupidness...

Well, you white folks get the last laugh. This "black" strip club is owned by white people.

This club will just feature more black strippers than most...so if that draws a black audience then so be it. Does Kyoto spa on Independence only draw Asian clientèle?
