No More Have A Nice Day Cafe

This weekend I have to pour out a little liquor for my homey -- Have A Nice Day Cafe.
The popular College Street nightclub closed after Halloween weekend because business was slow, said BAR Charlotte manager Joe Salamino.
The folks at Bar Management group, which ran the club, blamed the customer drought on the nearly four month shut-down of the club last year when the roof of the Hut collapsed, and forced Have A Nice Day to close. Salamino said business never picked up after that.
I think Have A Nice Day Cafe fell victim to increased competition. It was competing for the same dollars as BAR Charlotte, Dixie's and Buckhead Saloon.
Bar Management group plans to keep the lease and is trying to figure out how to replace Have A Nice Day Cafe. They won't do anything until the first of the year, Salamino said.
So, what do you think should go in there?
I'd like to see a place for people over age 40. I get emails all the time from people in that age range looking for a nice place to go. Another cool Latino club like Salamandra would be great too. And of course, I'm always pushing for a true hip-hop club.
What do you think? Post your suggestions below.

Oh my...I am the youngest acting and looking 40 yr old woman and we are in desperate need of an upscale adult lounge...like what the Sunset Club USED to me like back in the day.

Ciao

Then go to NY or California! Seriously, I am a non-smoker and cannot believe people actually complain about this stuff in tobacco country. and FYI, the old Champps restaurant,'billys' is non smoking and they dont get much business. i dont think a non smoking establishment would do well here. just my opinion

A late bar for older adults would be GREAT. As a single 37 yr old I find myself sitting at home on the weekends b/c there is not a great place to go for the older crowd.

I'd love to see a upscale hip-hop club go there.

SERIOUS THINKING AND PLANNING NEEDS TO BE DONE. YOU HAVE TO KEEP UP WITH THE BARS/CLUBS AROUND THAT AREA. COYOTE UGLY,TIME,DIXIES,BAR AND THE FORUM NEED TO BE TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION. SOMETHING NEW AND DIFFERENT IS ALWAYS GOOD.

YES no more half naked women dancing on bars! I think a hip hop night club would be awesome, thats just a fine tough line to walk.

strip club

upscale hip-hop club. dress code. lounge areas. a place for grown folks.

That's all we need - hip hop club...a place to house thugs. They wouldn't go in, they would just hang outside of the place and cause trouble. An upscale lounge will be great, but will shut down after a couple months.

I would like to see a place for the over 25 crowd. I would like a place that doesn't play techno non-stop. I do like to dance to hip-hop and I'm white. I'm just sick of all the clubs acting like we are in downtown Miami and they are making people wait in line all night so they can let the celebrities in. ha ! I hate techno music !!!! Please Please Please no techno music.

Every club around here plays pretty much the same music and it's not techno...there is only one "techno" club in downtown Charlotte and that's Liquid

I would love to see a ALL Hip Hop clud - upscale 25 and older.

Charlotte is behind the times with this one - I don't understand why it is so hard to make this work in this city. It is what everyone is looking for white & black.

Every non-smoking bar in Charlotte has shut down, including Billy's. They lasted 6 months. All of you who want to open one, put YOUR money up and quit shoving it down everyone else's throats. I hope you don't mind going broke like the rest have......

A piano bar would be great. Remember the Grad days by the lake at University Place?

Here's an equation for you

HIP HOP + CLUB = GUN SHOTS!!!

No serious investor should EVER do it.

Always has failed always will

I've been here all my life. Been going to clubs forever. The Hip Hop Clubs attract young African American Men. AND THEY CANNOT BEHAVE. I'd dare to say 10 - 20 "Black Clubs" have opened and closed within months!!! That's not racist, NO!!! It's just very disappointing and very sad.

Keep it non-smoking. The non-smoking places go out of business because they are awful BARS, not clubs or are situated in forgotten places like Park Road(Champp's new tenant)

Also it would not hurt to advertise the fact it is non smoking.....I certainly did not know
Hip hop is dead. So leave it alone

Hip hop is not dead. You must be dead for thinking it is. ALl of the clubs will mix it in with all the other forms of music they play. I think that an all hip hop club can work but someone experienced in managing one would have to be in control or it would be disaster all over again.

All young black males dont misbehave. People make it look like everyone one of us is out to cause trouble. Its just the few bad apples out of the group who ruin it for all of us.

I think most over 40 like me prefer upscale jazzy intimate atmosphere clubs like Sunset or Madison's where there is never a fight or misbehavior and where people are not knocking you down. Just a nice place to take a date to have a nice drink and listen to some music.

Don't get it wrong on music...many clubs play techno and Liquid is NOT the only techno club downtown. Have you been there? Talk to any DJ in Charlotte and he or she will be glad to assist you in knowing the difference. Every club does play hip/hop, but mixed up for clubs. Invest my money in a "pure" hip/hop club, no thanks. I rather take my chance on financial return purchasing a lottery ticket. A potential club in Uptown Charlotte will need to invest about $3-$5 Million at least. Most of the clubs in Uptown have invested that amount or more. Location is a factor in Uptown and its not cheap. Think about cash-flow and the only nights to make money will be Thursday, Friday and Saturday. For it not to be a "private club" the establishment must serve food. You want to put a hip/hop club in Uptown Charlotte? Cash out your 401k plan or take your savings and invest in one. Good Luck.

same old arguement different day. the masses don't realize that not all electronic music is techno and think that what mtv shoves down thier throat is whats best. a hip hop club in charlotte...there's a novel concept. every single mainstream club in charlotte plays hip hop and you want more? no thanks.

Why don't they replace it with something like a Tremont Music Hall or Double-door Inn type establishment. They have too many dance clubs as it is uptown, why not open up a venue where performers can perform live. Just a thought!

I, MYSELF, WOULD LIKE TO SEE A LATIN CLUB. I JUST MOVED HERE FROM NY AND THE NON-SMOKING THING KILLED US AND MY POCKETS AS A BARTENDER.....ALOT OF ESTABLISHMENTS WERE FORCED TO CLOSE. A R&B/ HIP- HOP CLUB WOULD BE NICE TOO..I DON'T SEE ENOUGH DIVERSITY IN THE CITY...WHICH SURPRISES ME, CAUSE CHARLOTTE IS SO DIVERSIFIED. I DON'T EVEN SEE AN INTEREST GOING TO THE CITY BECAUSE OF THE LACK OF DIVERSITY. I THINK A HIP- HOP CLUB WOULD HELP IN THAT AREA, AS WELL AS, A SALSA OR MERENGAE CLUB OR EVEN, A CLUB THAT HAS A FEW DIFFERENT FLOORS/ROOMS PLAYIN ALL THESE TYPES OF MUSIC SO WE CAN ALL PARTY TOGETHER.....IT'S 2005 ..HELLO .. GET A WEAPONS SEARCH AND A DRESS CODE(NOT TOO STRICT0. I WANNA SEE MY THUGS OUT...BEHAVING THOUGH! C'MON CHARLOTTE HELP ME OUT!

Hip hop club???...two words....HORRIBLE IDEA. I'm not making generalizations about any race of people here...I dont know if you guys have noticed the news lately, but look at the areas of Charlotte "that type of patron" would come from to go to a club like that. I wouldn't dare to venture anywhere in the east Charlotte and Eastland Mall area anytime near dark. And you want to put a club in uptown where people are coming to have a nice night out with the money they worked hard to earn all week???? I mean the robbery rate for this city has spiked over the past year and luckily the majority of those robberies have happened in areas outside of uptown.....so to you I say....you want a hip hop club and to see "your thugs out"? Then venture over to Independence Blvd/ East Charlotte and hang out with them all you want and see how long you keep your wallet....if I were an investor the mere thought of that kind of demographic would send me running for the hills!!!

Oh yeah...a non smoking bar that plays LIVE music would be GREAT!!! I hate coming home smelling like an ashtray just because everyone has that disgusting habit....it's not because of the non smoking rule, it's the lack of advertising and management that put those places under.
Thanks.

It's always funny, all these people want these venues because it'll make Charlotte more hip or cool, but I don't see any of these people willing to invest in it themselves, they want someone else to do it for them. If you want a hip hop club, why don't you and your friends pull your resources together and open up a hip hop club yourselves. Y'all can open up a hip hop club all you want, but trust me, you won't stay in business for long. All it will take is for some knucklhead or one of those "thugs" to start acting stupid and it will be closed down in no time.

Anonymous said...

I'm a black man and I wouldn't waste my time opening up a hip hop club, uptown or anywhere! It's just not worth the hassle. I guess I just lost my "street-cred" or that won't make me a "thug", but whatever, you can have it.

There is a non-smoking bar in charlotte that plays live music. It is The Evening Muse and it is the one of the best places to hear live music in Charlotte.

Anonymous said...

I have been pushing for a true hip hop club for a while, one to match the standards of a New York hip hop club, or one in DC, and even Atlanta, because charlotte is a growing city, but i feel its growth is not for or to satisfy charlottians. Charlotte is big enough, we should have a place for every type, and age range, from elementary children up to elderly indeviduals.

Anonymous said...

We need a club that plays Free Style music, forget about hip hop we already have enough of that in Charlotte. And as for a Latin club, that sounds good too, but it would only play Salsa & merengae. Leave the cowboy boots at home, like I said Salsa & Merengae. And if people don't like to smoke then that is understood, but I just don't see people not smoking in a bar. What goes with alcohol? A smoke!

I think a combination like the "ODESSY" of the 80's...

I think an alternative club would be nice...it allows everyone to enter the club and feel free to do anything they like to do...the need to worry about someone looking or worrying about you is no one's business...Yes, an alternative club should be considered...trust, you will get an audience and plenty of spectators
